In December last year, Mwai Kibaki, Kenya's president, claimed victory and a second term in office. The opposition said that the polls were rigged. A wave of ethnic violence followed. By the end of January more than 1,500 people had been killed. The following month, Kofi Annan, the former UN secretary-general, brokered a power sharing deal between Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga. Yvonne Ndgege reports
