Literally "beautiful singing", bel canto opera derives from the Italian stylistic singing school of the same name. Bel canto lines are typically florid and intricate, requiring supreme agility and pitch control. The bel canto era style was rapidly popularized by Giuseppe Verdi, beginning with his biblical opera Nabucco. Verdi's operas resonated with the growing spirit of Italian nationalism in the post-Napoleonic era, and he quickly became an icon of the patriotic movement (although his own politics were perhaps not quite so radical). In the early 1850s, Verdi produced his three most popular operas: Rigoletto, Il trovatore and La traviata. But he continued to develop his style, composing perhaps the greatest French Grand opera, Don Carlos, and ending his career with two Shakespeare-inspired works, Otello and Falstaff, which reveal how far Italian opera had grown in sophistication since the early 19th century. After Verdi, the sentimental "realistic" melodrama of verismo appeared in Italy. This was a style introduced by Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Ruggiero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci that came virtually to dominate the world's opera stages with such popular works as Giacomo Puccini's La Boheme, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly. The film features Bugs Bunny being chased by Elmer Fudd through a six-minute and 11 second operatic parody of 19th century classical composer Richard Wagner's operas, particularly Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung) and Tannhäuser. It is sometimes characterized as a condensed version of Wagner's Ring, and its music borrows heavily from the second opera Die Walküre, woven around the standard Bugs-Elmer conflict. Its a dirty thankless job and the stars get the applause, the accolade and the publicity. But there are perks. They all depend on you and you can sabotage their moment by tripping on the light in a very important scene or do an early blackout on the stars momentous curtain call and blame it on a faulty bulb. The prop can always disappear and how can Romeo be in a fight scene with no sword? So thats why the stars are always chummy with the crew. Some of them even give token of gifts opening night. And invite everyone in a cast and crew party closing night on last performance. Its not the proverbial casting couch the directors and producers are accused of that is controversial but nowadays its the cast and crew who have the most well hidden agendas hard to detect and deduce. Enveloped by black curtains on intervals in-between scenes or maybe one comes back pretending to have left something in the dressing room, knowing the last person to close and lock up is the stage manager. This High School play of Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet gives us a poignant tender moment between a cast and a crew. It starts with a glance, developed a spark then smoldering into a flame of obsession knowing its futile for one who is deemed invisible and the object of love is unreachable star one can only admire from afaryet in a pivotal moment the beloved object of love sensing the intense gaze gave back a loving look of tenderness to the glorious disbelief of the crew being discovered that one exists is self consciously confusing. At the end of the performance everyone is leaving but theres too much to do before lock-up; while cleaning up and doting on a piece of costume worn by the beloved he came to a pleasant surprise! The object of love returned Wagner (1813-1883) - Prelude & Liebestod, from "Tristan und Isolde" In Tovey's defence of Bruckner's Fourth Symphony in a programme note, Defects of form are not a justifiable ground for criticism from listeners who profess to enjoy the bleeding chunks of butcher's meat chopped from Wagner's operas . . ., his choice of words (the envy of all programme note writers ever since!) made it pretty clear that he did not exactly approve of this practice. However, here we have two such bleeding chunks, chopped from one of Wagner's operas by Wagner himself, who apparently did not share Tovey's objections. Why he did this is anybody's guess - mine is that it was simple business, a commercial trailer to reel in potential punters. Wagner, let's face it, had only three preoccupations in life: opera, sex - and money. Regarding this last, he seemed particularly intent on maximising his profit margin through minimal investment: he wasted no time on creating something wonderful to join these two passages, just a simple snip of the scissors (like a film editor)dispensed with the two and a half hours separating Prelude from Liebestod. But the idea of doing it, now that was wonderful! The two passages, while not notable for any dynamic contrast, beautifully balance longing against fulfilment. The notion that love can be so intense as to achieve its fulfilment, its redemption, only in death is one that endlessly fascinated Wagner, finding no finer expression than in the illicit liaison of Tristan und Isolde. Thus in the Prelude, Wagner conveys the unrequited longing of the lovers through music whose harmonic tensions are kept from exploding only by sheer physical restraint. A rising dissonance resolves only onto further dissonance. Lyrical ardour now flows, now hesitates, lapping like hungry waves surging against a shore. The vocal line is simply omitted from the Liebestod, a lack which you don't feel, unless you know what is missing. The ecstasy of redemption, as the lovers finally unite in death, is projected with nerve-tingling passion, through a dominance of arching phrases, shimmering in strings and harp, lapping over one another in burgeoning harmonic, and rhythmic, tension. Here, he time for hesitation and restraint is past. With fervent abandon the music rises to a properly brief climax (apposite word!), before everything dissolves in a long, slow benediction, the Prelude's rising dissonance finally finding its heart's desire resolution onto consonance.

He made his operatic debut at age twelve singing the Tosca shepherd on the nationally-televised Live From Lincoln Center with Luciano Pavarotti, "Great Performers at Lincoln Center - Pavarotti Plus!" which aired on PBS February 28, 1990. Two nights later, he opened in the role of Kurt in New York City Opera's revival of The Sound Of Music, directed by James Hammerstein II. Ted was also cast in Tannhauser and Billy Budd at the Met. For two consecutive seasons, he performed the title role in the Lincoln Center production of Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors. Ted's first recording "The Treble Boys was released in 1991. He also made a guest appearance on Placido Domingo's recording, "The Broadway I Love," in which he portrays a younger Domingo in "Try To Remember". He has sung at the Met in several roles, one of which was Fyodor in Boris Godunov in October 1990. He is a credited vocalist in the 1991 version of Mozart's Zauberflote released on DVD in 2000. It features the Metropolitan Opera and Ted Huffman, Benjamin Schott and Per-Christian Brevig singing the parts of the three boys. Ted attended Yale and lived in Greenwich, CT. He studied voice with composer Anthony Piccolo and continued singing, studying with voice teacher Herbert Burtis as a baritone. Stephen Van Dyck Stephen Van Dyck has been a member of St. Peter's Church Choir of Men and Boys in Philadelphia since 1984. During that time he has sung solos from Vaughan Williams' Hodie both with the Choral Arts Society at Philadelphia's Academy of Music and with the Chorale Delaware and the Delaware Symphony. In 1989, he performed the treble solo in Leonard Bernstien's Chichester Psalms at the Academy of Music. He was also a featured soloist in Telarc's 1990 release, Christmas at the Pops. A student at The Haverford School, Stephen is a member of the chorus and the Notables, a vocal octet. Stephen is actively involved in photography, art, design, and engineering. An avid sailor, he has participated in Block Island Race Week and the Bermuda to Connecticut run.
