StrangeSkyscraper Sculpture Unveiled in ManhattanSkyscraper Sculpture Unveiled in ManhattanThe Associated PressA 65-foot sculpture that's pays tribute to New York's tall buildings has been unveiled in Rockefeller Center. It's made of replicas of stainless steel Erector set pieces. (June 10)MANHATTAN'S LATEST SKYSCRAPER HAS NEW YORKERS REACHING FOR THEIR CAMERAS.IT'S 65 FEET HIGH -- 7 TONS IN WEIGHT -- AND MADE OF THE SAME SORT OF STAINLESS STEEL PIECES YOU'D FIND IN AN ERECTOR SET. IT WAS CREATED BY CHRIS BURDEN -- AN ARTIST. [Notes:SOT --CHRIS BURDEN/ARTIST] "It's an homage to all the tall buildings in New York City. And it's kind of an interesting size because it's made out of toy parts and it's a model of a skyscraper and inspired by them, but it's actually as tall as a real building." [Notes:VO--SHOTS OF SCULPTURE]THE SCULPTURE WAS UNVEILED TUESDAY AT ROCKEFELLER CENTER.IT'S CALLED "WHAT MY DAD GAVE ME." [Notes:SOT -- CHRIS BURDEN/ARTIST] "Well my dad was an engineer and he actually worked for the Rockefeller foundation in the fifties, so I used to come to this building as a child. So that's part of the title too, I think, so it's kind of a nice, nice relationship." [Notes:VO -- SHOTS OF SCULPTURE]PEOPLE WHO STOPPED BY TO TAKE A LOOK SEEMED IMPRESSED. [Notes:SOT -- NIGEL BRIAND/FAN OF SKYSCRAPER SCULPTURE] "I really love the way when you stand back from it, you can look at many different sort of angles and see like different shapes going through the piece and if you stand back far enough, it almost looks like it's shimmering in certain places. It's kind of blurry. It's quite an interesting piece." [Notes:VO --SHOTS OF SKYSCRAPER SCULPTURE]FOR THE PAST DECADE, BURDEN HAS BEEN WORKING WITH REPLICA ERECTOR SET PIECES -- AND THIS IS BILLED AS HIS MOST COMPLEX WORK TO DATE.IT WILL BE ON VIEW AT ROCKEFELLER CENTER UNTIL JULY 19TH.
